The 65 Supermarkets and Restaurants That Wont Sell GMO Salmon

As genetically engineered salmon is poised to be approved by government, the market is steadily shrinking for the FrankenFish.  65 supermarkets and restaurants have pledged not to sell GM salmon, including Target, Giant Eagle, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods.

Salmon would be the first GM animal to be commercialized.  ”AquAdvantage” salmon is produced by AquaBounty Technologies and has a growth hormone regulating gene inserted from a Pacific Chinook salmon and a promoter from an ocean pout.  The goal is a faster-growing fish.  While the FDA, unsurprisingly, has stated the salmon “would not have a significant impact on the U.S. environment,” studies are finding otherwise.
